Michael and Christy Underwood have an acre of sorghum they are turning into molasses. They are looking for help with the harvest. If you are interested contact them at UnderWood Family Farms.

More details from Underwood Family Farms:

Have you ever wondered how molasses is made? Well here’s your chance to come see this southern tradition from start to finish. Underwood Family Farms will be harvesting their acre patch of sorghum cane the week of Sept. 27-Oct.2. They are looking for volunteers to help strip the fodder (leaves), cut off the seed heads, and cut down the stalks of cane to be milled that weekend (Oct.3-4).

If you don’t feel like coming for the work, then come for the fun! The milling and cooking of the cane will take place at Elliott Family Farm’s second annual Heritage Days which boasts a hit and miss engine, blacksmith, grist mill, and a general store full of farm fresh wares, plus a village of 1800’s cabins and outbuildings. It’s fun for the whole family!

For more details and directions talk to Christy Underwood at the Yorkmont Market on Saturday morinings. Underwood Family Farms ph: 704.538.5742 website: www.underwoodfamilyfarms.net

It was fun and interesting. We had about 10 people that came out and helped us harvest and and bought around 150 lbs of potatoes at rock bottom prices.

We still ended up with about 650 more lbs of potatoes we stacked in the basement.

I was in la-la land when I thought that we would be finally done with potatoes by noon or, at the latest, 2 pm. I picked up the last potato at 6:23 pm…

Special thanks to Paul Griffin, who showed up first and stayed all day and Carl of Carlea Farms, who just came to help.

And to Jenifer, who picked up potatoes all day, whipped up a lunch of cheese, prosciutto; tomatoes, and freshly dug potatoes, and then out did herself with a Cajun Okra stew for supper.

Thanks to Cassie and Natalie of the Grateful Growers, we now have an intern.
CJ and her husband Drew have a landscape business but have purchased some land and want to learn how to grow vegetables and livestock.

She is learning livestock stuff from the Grateful Growers and they put her in touch with us.

She showed up Tuesday morning as Jenifer and I were moving the chickens to new grass and jumped right in helping.

We told her flat out we had years of experience on what not to do and that was about it.

The work we do can be drudgery if performed alone. We have so much to do that Jenifer and I end up working separately on tasks often. But when a third person is added to the mix, both Jenifer and I gravitate to that person. New conversations and ideas. Productive work sky-rockets.
