Reality Check

Friday, we opened the doors and let the chickens out on pasture. Only two or three took advantage of the situation. They were scared. They had spent their entire young lives in an enclosed building and never seen sky or grass.

That is the thing about most “free-range” chickens you hear about. They are raised indoors for 4-6 weeks, and then given “access” to “range” via a few small doors in the chicken house for a couple of weeks before being butchered. They don’t go out those doors, they are terrified of the unfiltered sunlight.

I am not even going to get into the whole cage-free, organic, omega-3 eggs thing.
