Farming Sustainably to Be Criminalized?

I am on a few email lists dealing with such things as pastured poultry, compost tea, organic lawn care, sustainable small farms in NC, etc.

Last week, I started getting these alerts from all the lists about House bill 875.

It sounds good, modernize food safety laws but I read the bill. It is extremely vague and has the full support of Monsanto, Cargill, ADM, and Tyson.

Judge for yourself.

If you want to delve deep… Codex Alimentarius

We are not going to quit growing food, we may have to label it as table decorations or catfish bait…

I guess that sounds insane. It is. A woman in Wisconsin was getting hassled for selling raw milk cheddar cheese at a farmer’s market. She called Wisconsin Fish & Game and found out there were no restrictions on fish bait. Now she sells all her cheese as fish bait.

Although raw milk sales are legal in SC, they are illegal in NC. We buy raw milk from a neighbor who is certified organic. Probably the the best run dairy in the state.

My neighbor, by state law, can’t sell her milk for human consumption. She has to label each milk purchase in 1/2 ” high letters “Not For Human Consumption” She sells it as pet milk.

The labeling is a small victory I guess. Last summer, there was a bill in the NC house that would require folks selling pet food milk to add charcoal to the milk and dye it black.
